A ScreenPlay Experience
Won Sheridan College Sprint Week 2018: Best Co-operative Game
Designing The Little Astronaut was such a rewarding experience. One of our design challenges was to make a game kids of all ages could play just by standing still on a block of carpet.
The game is meant to be played in the waiting room of the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, so the content and game play had to be calm yet entertaining and exciting enough to reward players who stays on the block the longest.
To break down The Little Astronaut, the player can create different types of themed planets that will appear once a square is occupied. The longer they stand on the same block, the more stars the planet creates and the planet itself begins to transform! Stepping off the occupied block will cause the planet to burst into fireworks of stars, so the kids won't be sad that their planet is gone (because they created something else that's just as spectacular!)
To encourage kids (and adults!) to play with one another, clusters of stars will appear and once that cluster is occupied, a Canadian astronaut will fly into the screen and land on the planet that was made from the cluster of stars! Sometimes more than one cluster will appear so the players can creatively find ways to get the astronaut to land on their planet!
